Project Statement

Bio-Cycle explores how bioplastics can transform everyday packaging into a zero-trace material cycle. Through soap packaging, dried-flower sachets, tea-bag forms, and candy wrappers, the project reimagines packaging not as waste, but as a temporary boundary between product, use, and nature.

Design ideas / Sketch

This design uses cornstarch–gelatin bioplastic as the outer layer of the soap, making use of starch’s properties: it can be shaped, dried into a film, and softened by water. During production, liquid soap is poured directly into the unset material, allowing the soap and its packaging to form together. The packaging can be torn open or softened by water during use, reflecting the concept of low-waste and dissolvable packaging.

This series is inspired by tea bags, chocolate packaging, and snack sachets. It uses bioplastic to create small, portable, and tearable packaging. The design allows users to take one portion at a time, reducing waste and improving convenience.

Material Testing

This project observes how bioplastics respond to hot water, hardness testing, sunlight exposure, and soil contact. Some tests showed limited visible change in the short term, so the documentation focuses on process, observation, and material limitations.

Dissolution Experiment

The material softened, became thinner, and partially dissolved in hot water, showing its potential for dissolvable and low-waste packaging.

Sunlight & Soil Test

Limited visible change was observed in the short term, suggesting that natural degradation requires more time and depends on humidity, temperature, sunlight, and soil conditions.

Climate Log

Temperature and humidity in Taipei from 25 April to 5 May were recorded as references for drying, shrinkage, and material stability.
